On the day of Pentecost in the year 1485, the troupes of the Marquis of Cadiz stormed through the defensive wall of Moorish Ronda conquering the city for the Catholic King Ferdinand. A mosque and the ancient wall were partially destroyed in the siege.

In the spot where that mosque stood, today sits the Iglesia del Espiritu Santo, with its resplendent honey coloured limestone (the Church of the Holy Spirit, built between 1485 and 1505). The wall was rebuilt in the 18th century. These two monuments are today among the most attractive and emblematic icons of Ronda.

The Hotel Jardín de la Muralla, with its six levels of terraced garden, is flanked along its entire length by the church, which towers above it on its south eastern side, and the wall to the north east on which it is perched. This setting provides the hotel with a peaceful seclusion few would expect in the very heart of the medieval city. Not surprisingly it is the garden itself that is, for many visitors, the hotel's most endearing feature with its terraces, swimming pool and wealth of plants and mature trees that draw dozens of species of wild birds to this little sanctuary all year round.

The hotel's vantage point offers stunning views of the Sierra de las Nieves, the old town, the Jewish Quarters, the Moorish Almocabar Gate, Barrio San Francisco and the mountains beyond.

Much of the unique charm of this small family-run hotel is due to it being a converted old Andalusian mansion, one of the finest houses in the city and once visited by the famous writers, artists and bohemians who have fallen in love with Ronda over the decades. Having undergone the minimum of architectural reformation when converted into the hotel it is today, it retains a homeliness and charisma that makes its visitors come back year after year. For the place does not have the feel of a hotel at all, but rather, the charm of a much loved house, which is exactly what it is -- Jose María's home, where he enjoys welcoming guests from all over the world to his beloved Ronda paradise.
